Project Details

"I consider ancient Greek tragedy to be the greatest form of art due to the fusion of the Apollonian and Dionysian elements into a harmonious whole, allowing the viewer to experience the full spectrum of human nature. The Dionysian element pertained to music, while the Apollonian was found in the dialogues, which served to balance the Dionysian revelry. Essentially, the Apollonian spirit gave form to the abstract Dionysian."

Friedrich Nietzsche

The Markideio Theatre renovation in Paphos reinterprets classical theatrical tradition through a contemporary architectural vision inspired by Nietzsche’s philosophy of balance between opposing forces. The design features solid volumes connected by a sculptural, perforated white canopy that creates dynamic interplay of light and shadow, enhancing visitor experience. The stage is repositioned to optimize acoustic sand sightlines, while the building’s form respects the city’s scale. Complemented by versatile outdoor spaces, a new open-air theatre, and future amenities, this project transforms Markideio into a vibrant cultural landmark and community hub for Paphos.
